Changeling VR

Project Type

Virtual Reality Game

Date

Summer 2025

Changeling VR is a first-person VR mystery game built in Unreal where you play as detective Aurelia Walker, who has magical abilities. I worked as a technical artist on this game for the summer of 2025, doing things like 3D modeling, texturing, rigging, environmental design, quality assurance, optimization, and debugging technical art related issues.

The level I worked primarily on was the Mother's Level, which is the first level the player encounters. For about two weeks, I remade and refreshed Toby's model, who is the baby of the family Aurelia was hired to help. His strange behavior is what prompted this job, and is the basis of the game. Long story short, he has been replaced with a "Changeling," and my task was to reimagine and recreate this Changeling baby. This involved heavily tweaking the existing model, texturing to give the child a tree-like appearance, working with LOD's to help optimize, and retargeting/editing the old rig onto the new baby model so that the baby could still use all its animations. This process was done in Maya, Adobe Substance Painter, and Blender.

After that, I focused on things like creating models and textures for various props and environmental objects. I also created low-poly, optimized clouds for the Mother's level, and assisted in its environmental design and layout. I also went through the project and cleaned up or consolidated unused/unnecessary assets to assist in game optimization and storage.

Towards the end of the summer, I was tasked with texturing a dragon model that appears as the final boss of Douglas's level, which is the second level of the game. This level was designed to look like a storybook, so I worked with the modeler for this level and the concept artist for this level in order to texture the dragon in such a way that it looked good in 3D and also matched with the concept artist's vision.

Throughout the summer, I also created and conducted various playtests at the end of each sprint, gathering data to analyze information that would help us create the next sprint goals. This game is available for early access on Steam. I've included a link to the game's official website, and the early access version can also be found there.

ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Jinna Smail, and I am a game design student seeking an internship! I do a little bit of everything, but most of the projects here showcase my artistic abilities, technical or otherwise. I like to 3D model, animate, design, code, and learn new things!

I am based in Oklahoma and New York, but I'm open to relocation!
